Chapter 7 · Field signs
Read the signs in the field
Boards, marches, lineups and piles: the working signs that carry a technique into a scene.
Picture path
- Coloured stay bars fill six room rows while one upright brass line crosses every row at a single position. What technique is the line performing?Notice the line cuts across all rows at one shared instant instead of framing a run of items in one row.
- A floor of black and cream tiles holds one strict alternation evenly from edge to edge, with no centre where change begins. What work does this floor mark?Ask whether the pattern radiates from one starting tile or has been stamped uniformly across the board.
- One figure's arms stretch impossibly far so each hand rests at an opposite far end of the frame. What does this reach announce?See where the hands land: at the two extreme ends, not around one small maintained region.
- A new trophy goes onto a small ranked shelf while the weakest one is tipped into a bin below. What loop is running? The shelf holds a fixed number of slots, and only the current worst keeper is evicted.
- With her eyes shut, a dealer fans a full deck and lifts one drawn card high above the rest. What does the draw mean? Her closed eyes and the unbroken undivided fan matter more than the single lifted card.
- Five identical grey figures stand shoulder to shoulder, each one taller than the last. What are their bodies encoding? These are standing figures, not stacked goods; their height is the message, not how many there are.
- A blank-eyed grey figure fills the lit doorway and a boy pulls back before ever stepping through. What is the doorway saying? The boy never entered: the blocking figure rejects the move before any work could fail.
- Identical tags gather in piles above labelled bins, three copies of one tag piled up while other bins hold just one. What helper step does this infer? The piled things are identical goods; each pile's height says how many copies exist.
- A digger moves through a hedge maze leaving a continuous trench through every corridor he has entered so far. What does the trench infer in code? The marks only trail behind the forward-moving digger; nobody is retracing them empty-handed.
- A glowing rod stands upright in a row of pebble jars, holding three jars on one side and one on the other. What step does the rod infer? The rod stays planted between two groups; no hand is drawing anything blind.
