Chapter 8 · Helpers and rooms

Helper steps and working rooms

Subordinate steps drawn into the data, then the first rooms: read the structure off the walls.

A long rail of wooden letter tiles under a green tortoise's steady hands, every tile turned about so its letter shows mirrored, and the whole row now reads from right to left in warm workbench light — no walker or footprints anywhere along the rail.

Picture path

  1. An entire rail of letter tiles has been turned about at once, every letter mirrored, and the words now read right to left. What helper step is this? The whole row was turned together while standing still; look for the absence of any lone walker or footprints.
  2. A jug with graduated level marks fills drop by drop as it is carried along a row of numbered bins, its level only rising. What helper step does the vessel infer?Watch the marked level climb as the vessel moves forward; nothing here is being handed back to anyone.
  3. Two jars with identical stripes hover side by side above a rail of switches while one plain orange jar sits alone below. What does the matching pair announce? The message is carried by the exact twins, not by the one jar that merely looks different.
  4. Six identical lidded bins stand in one straight row and lids are lifted at several different positions along it. Which structure is the room itself?Any lid, even one in the middle, opens directly; nothing waits to be served from a front.
  5. A long bench rail holds tiles reading c, b, a, e, b in one row beside a flat type case. Which structure is this workbench?Every tile carries exactly one letter and the row reads in order like a word.
  6. A wooden rack of many identical brass hooks holds numbered tags on some hooks while other hooks hang bare. Which structure is the cabinet?A tag's number names its own hook directly, and a bare hook means the number was never stored.
  7. An iron chain of numbered links sweeps across the ceiling of a lamplit room, each link clipped only to the next. Which structure is the workshop?A link holds nothing but its neighbour; the only way to a far link is through every link before it.
  8. Pinned portrait photos on a corkboard are joined by taut red string running in every direction between them. Which structure is the case room? The strings cross and loop freely between photos; no photo sits above the others as a single parent.
  9. A wooden-framed floor of black and cream tiles runs in neat rows and columns with nothing standing on any tile. Which structure is the floor?Every cell lies open and reachable; no walls stand on the tiles to close a path.
  10. Waist-high cream walls with wooden caps stand on a checkered tile base, carving turning corridors and visible dead ends. Which structure is the room? The standing walls, not the tiles beneath them, carry the meaning: some paths close, one plan reads from above.
